Shopify Bulk Image Excel Template Column Descriptions

Welcome! We're excited you've installed Bulk Image Editor & Optimizer. This page explains each column in the Excel template in simple, non-technical language.

Before you start, keep these simple rules in mind:

  • You do not need to fill every column.
  • Some columns are only for your reference and will not change anything in your online store.
  • Some columns are Do not edit. Bulk Image Editor & Optimizer uses them internally.

Quick checklist

  • Step 1 – Choose the product and image
    Find the product row (or add a new row) for the image you want to change.
  • Step 2 – Set the Action
    In the Action column, choose: A (Add), U (Update), or D (Delete).
  • Step 3 – Fill only the key columns
    • For Add: set Action = A, fill New Image Path, and optionally Image AltText, Image Position, and Variants.
    • For Update: set Action = U, change Image AltText, Image Position, Variants, and/or New Image Path or Image File Name.
    • For Delete: set Action = D. You usually do not need to change other columns.
  • Step 4 – Leave ID columns as they are
    Do not edit Product ID or Image ID.

Excel Titles

Bulk Image Editor & Optimizer Excel Title When you open the exported Excel file, you'll see these columns. Here’s what each one means:

Title Description
Product Title For your reference only. Shows which product this row belongs to. Optional. Changing this will not change anything in your online store.
Image Url For your reference only. Shows the current online image URL or a thumbnail from Excel macros. Optional. Changing this will not change anything in your online store.
Image AltText Optional. Edit this text to change the image alt text in your store. This can help with SEO and accessibility.
Image File Name Optional short name for an existing image file (without .jpg or .png). Use letters, numbers, - and _ only. This column only works when you update an existing image. For new images, Bulk Image Editor & Optimizer will keep the original file name automatically. Leave this column empty when you add new images.
Image Position Optional. Change the number to reorder images. Use 1 for the first image, 2 for the second, and so on. Leave blank for new images; they will be placed last.
Variants Optional. Shows which variants use this image. Editing this will change which variants the image belongs to in your store. One image can belong to multiple variants.
Action Required. Tells Bulk Image Editor & Optimizer what to do with this row: A (Add a new image), D (Delete an image), U (Update an existing image). This is the most important column.
New Image Path Required for Add and Update. The path or URL to the new image. Supports web URLs, relative paths, zip files, or Dropbox links.
Product ID Do not edit. Bulk Image Editor & Optimizer uses this to find the right product. When you add new images, make sure this value is copied correctly.
Image ID Do not edit. Bulk Image Editor & Optimizer uses this to find the right image when deleting or updating.
